On March 20th 2008, the school day at PHS was given over to a celebration, combining the signing of our partnership agreement with Thyolo Secondary School in Malawi and Global Citizenship Day.
Students, staff, friends and guests participated in a wide range of activities and events. The signing ceremony itself took place in three phases, each addressed by one of our invited guests, Robin Harper MSP (who spoke on the importance of Green Issues), Yonah Matemba (a teacher from Thyolo who gave us a Malawian perspective) and Linda MacDonald (from the medical charity MUMS).
We were also visited by the Provost of Midlothian, Councillor Adam Montgomery, and representatives of the Cooperative Society of Scotland, with their displays and activities on the theme of Global Citizenship, including a pedal-powered smoothie maker.
At lunchtime we were treated to a concert (in the Hub) by Malawian ex-Bhundu Boy Rise Kagona and Scotland's Champion Doug Veitch.
Staff and pupils mounted an amazing range of activities, including African Mask Making, Paper Making, African Drumming, Football (but make the ball first!), Recycled Jewellery Making, Paper Bag Making, Trading Games, Malawian Food Preparation, Friendship Bracelets, Third World Drama, Parliamo Chichewa, Biking, T-Shirt Printing, African Dance, Walking (but with your water bucket on your head!). Displays included the John Muir Award group, the Malawi Writers Group, the Ceramics group and Burnt Out Records. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved.
Here are some more photos from the day.
